Canada covers the widest spread of any country here: Inuvik at nearly 71°N magnetic needs no geomagnetic activity at all, while Jasper at 59°N magnetic needs a Kp 3.7 before the oval reaches it. That spread is the whole point of magnetic latitude, and it is why a single national forecast is close to meaningless. Season runs August to April across the north, which is longer than anywhere in Europe on this list.
Required Kp is calibrated from magnetic latitude, not the latitude on a map, which is why two places at the same map position can need very different activity.
The northern territories. Inuvik sits at about 70.9°N magnetic and Yellowknife at 68.9°N, both far enough north that the required Kp is 0 and the aurora is overhead on quiet nights. Whitehorse needs Kp 1.3 and Dawson City 0.3. Further south the numbers climb steeply: Jasper needs Kp 3.7, which is an active night rather than an ordinary one.
It depends entirely on where you stand, and the range is wider here than in any other country on this site. Inuvik, Yellowknife and Churchill are all Kp 0. Dawson City is 0.3, Whitehorse 1.3, and Jasper 3.7. Each of those is calibrated from magnetic latitude, not the latitude on a map, which is why they differ from the general tables you will find elsewhere.
August to April across the north, one of the longest seasons anywhere, narrowing to October through March at Jasper. The peak for most Canadian destinations falls in March, when long dark nights still overlap with the higher geomagnetic activity that comes with the equinox.
Later than most people expect, and later than in Europe. Magnetic midnight in Canada falls well after clock midnight: around 01:48 at Churchill, 02:36 at Yellowknife, 03:06 at Whitehorse and 04:30 at Inuvik. That is when each place passes closest to the midnight sector of the auroral oval.
