Finnish Lapland sits a little further from the oval than Norway or Sweden: Levi is at 65°N magnetic with a threshold of Kp 0.7, and Rovaniemi at 63.8°N needs Kp 1.3. Both still see the aurora on ordinary active nights across a September-to-March season, and both peak in March. Magnetic midnight falls at almost exactly midnight on the clock at each, which is a rare convenience.
Required Kp is calibrated from magnetic latitude, not the latitude on a map, which is why two places at the same map position can need very different activity.
Kp 0.7 at Levi and Kp 1.3 at Rovaniemi, from magnetic latitudes of 65°N and 63.8°N. Rovaniemi sits far enough south that quiet nights are genuinely marginal there, so it rewards watching the forecast rather than simply going outside.
Almost exactly midnight. Magnetic midnight falls at about 00:00 local at both Rovaniemi and Levi, which is unusual: at most destinations it lands well before or well after the hour on the clock. That is when each passes closest to the midnight sector of the auroral oval.
September to March at both destinations, peaking in March. Midwinter brings the longest darkness but the least settled weather, so the equinox months tend to come out ahead.
