A real answer comes from weighing five things, not the single Kp number a hundred apps are shouting at you. Here's how to read the forecast like someone who does it every night.
The five factors that decide it
Whether you'll see the Aurora tonight comes down to five things stacking up in your favour:
- Geomagnetic activity (Kp), calibrated to your magnetic latitude rather than a generic table.
- Clear skies: cloud is the single biggest Aurora killer. Even a Kp 7 storm is invisible through overcast.
- Darkness, since the sky has to be genuinely dark, which rules out high-latitude summer and the hour either side of twilight.
- The moon: a bright moon washes out faint displays.
